I made this pack to test out my new 18L Daypack pattern. It's a variation on my 40/50L frameless pattern. All of the materials (excluding webbing, hardware and stretch fabric) came from reclaimed fabric from @quantumsails and @gtcanvas. My goal for this pack design was to make it a useful size, while maintaining a distinctive style. I'm a big fan of how the lid looks and works on this pack.

I haven't made anything new this week, so I am going to continue to highlight features that I like on this last pack. This time I am looking at the lid design and why I like it. I think I've gone through 5 different designs before I came to this one. Coming up with something that has some storage, provides adequate coverage and doesn't use any elastic (that could eventually wear out) is really hard! This design has a nearly continuous top that has some pre-curved elements that helps to make the lid look fairly sleek. The cord channels along the side are the most unique feature. Webbing runs through the channel, connected to a buckle. As you tighten the buckle the channel cinches around the side of the pack, making the lid more secure and weatherproof.

This side pocket is one of my favorite small details on this pack. In my experience, most vintage packs don't have top loading side pockets. I use the side pockets all the time, so I wanted to include them, but I didn't want them to look billowy and obvious on the pack, to maintain the vintage aesthetic. I wanted them to lay flat. To do that I moved the pleat to one side and topstitched the fold. Doing so makes it naturally want to stay folded flat.

The elastic cord is passed through the cord channel and secured with a stopper knot at a grommet, so that it is replaceable. Functional and timeless.

This side pocket is one of my favorite small details on this pack. In my experience, most vintage packs don't have top loading side pockets. I decided that I wanted to take the pattern that I built for a 40L pack and convert it into a classic looking pack with panel loading access.

Usually when I update a pattern I am very thoughtful. I think through all the potential issues, and when I go to sew the bag, no real problems arise. Well, I rushed this one, and I don't know if I have ever had to seam rip this much before. I had panels that were just slightly too long. I forgot to add webbing. I added seam allowance where I didn't need to. Etc.

Overall I am very happy with how it came out. The panel loading is functional. The panel has a #10 zipper on either side with storm flaps and a big velcro cover over top. The straps have load lifters to take some of the stress off of the velcro and the zippers. They need to be unhooked using the g-hooks to access the panel.

I really like the water bottle pocket design. Since this is a classic looking pack, I didn't want to have pockets that were really "balloony." Instead of the standard pleated pocket I usually use, I made a pocket with a single pleat that I topstitched at the pleat, so that it would lay flat when it wasn't filled.

There are a few things that could have gone better. I fully intended to add compression straps to the sides of the pack. Unfortunately I forgot until I was too far down the build to go back to add them in. I really like the design of the lid, but unless the pack is fully filled the flap is quite large. I think I could downsize it in the future (maybe).

The pack is made out of 1000D Cordura and ballistic nylon from Rockywoods Fabric and Venom Gridstop from Ripstop by the Roll.

I've been making packs for a couple years -- for myself, friends, family, and the occasional customer who reaches out. It's primarily a hobby, but like all my hobbies I've gone way too deep and now have a nearly complete industrial sewing shop in my basement.

This one I designed for a Yosemite trip. 50L main body (not counting the ~10L roll top collar, side pockets, large front stretch pocket, bottom stretch pocket, or strap pockets -- so realistically a lot more than 50L). Goals were a reasonably light pack that carries well and has versatile storage. I also have pretty terrible shoulder mobility, so the side pockets and bottom stretch pocket are designed with that in mind.

The pack works with frame stays installed (ash frame stays in this one) or frameless with just the removable stiff foam sheet.
Comes with my favorite vest straps -- three stretchy pockets per strap, flask pocket, phone pocket, and a random crap pocket. They carry a load really well. Fair warning: @roamin.mo told me they give "uniboob."

Done and dusted! This morning I finished the seat tube bag for phone/keys/snacks. It's been pretty fun putting these patterns and bags together. All but the back saddle bag are my own patterns.

I picked up this Raleigh Kodiak touring bike off of fb marketplace for an absolute steal. It is from an era when touring bikes were like gravel bikes are now, super popular. It felt like the perfect opportunity to build up a classic looking commuter bike and learn a bit about bike maintenance.

Traffic is terrible and I have rollerski practice in the morning. Today I made a rear bike bag using a @pricklygorse MYOGTutorials pattern, rollerski racks made from 1/4" aluminum rod and a padded ski pole wrap. If anyone is on the fence about one of the MYOGTutorials patterns, I highly recommend them. They are a go to for me when I don't feel like making my own pattern.

Let's talk a bit about my design philosophy. When I'm designing a pack or bag, what am I thinking about?

Everything wears out eventually:
Hardware, fabric and components will all wear out eventually, so I make an effort to mitigate that as best I can in each build. Cord and webbing should be replaceable wherever possible. Any stretchy fabric panels (front pocket) should have some volume to it, so the fabric isn't always in a stretched state. I try to make the pack bottom out of a more durable fabric.

I am a big fan of using cordage for compression straps and closures. It's effective and it's easy to make replaceable.

Big side pockets are eminently functional:
I love a big side pocket on backpacking bags. They can be used for tons of different things. They aren't very aesthetic, but they are still awesome.

Breathability is a myth (but it can look cool):

No matter what you do, you are going to sweat when you go backpacking or doing a high output activity. It's just how it is. Materials like spacer mesh may do a little bit to provide some breathability, but it isn't very much. It also adds a considerable amount of weight to a pack. Is it worth it? Often I don't think so.

Accessibility:

I like to add bottom stuff pockets when possible. I have limited shoulder mobility (I should stretch more), which makes getting things out of a side pocket pretty challenging. The bottom pocket is much much more manageable.

My GR III is my favorite camera because I can easily take it on all of my adventures. My only problem with it is that I never feel like I have adequate protection for it, especially considering that it's not weather sealed and I'm often either trail running, skiing or canoeing.

To combat that, I made three pouches for it: a padded carrying case, a cinch sack, and a roll top dry bag, all made from Dyneema composite fabric and seam sealed where appropriate. The cinch sack is for trail running, providing a barrier against sweat and dust while keeping the camera easy to access. The padded case is for daily use. The roll top dry bag pairs with the padded case on canoe trips, backpacking trips, or any situation where I need a bit more protection.

Setting up a servo motor on my barn find Juki LU-563 has been a journey. I got a lot of recommendations for different motors, primarily the Consew 750, but I was impatient and purchased the 750W Reliable servo motor with a needle positioner. It was readily available on Amazon (I know, boo) and would arrive before I headed out on a canoe trip. It had reasonable reviews and the company looked legit, so I felt comfortable paying the premium over the generic servo motors. It arrived quickly and undamaged. That's where the positives end.

I opened the box and immediately realized this was a Chinese motor with a Reliable label slapped on it. It clearly hadn't been inspected in any way. I installed it following Reliable's videos and everything seemed to go together fine. The motor turned on and appeared to work. Then I installed the needle positioner synchronizer, and that didn't go well at all. There was no clear way to set needle up or needle down. I followed a YouTube video that seemed reasonable and was able to get the needle to stop at roughly the down position, but it would jerk into place and randomly speed up. The foot control was also extremely sensitive. Needle up via back press or the controller just didn't work consistently -- sometimes nothing happened, sometimes it made a full rotation. I reached out to some mechanics and their conclusion was that the positioner was physically missing the contact that controls needle up. I called Reliable customer service multiple times and received absolutely no response.

I packed the motor back up and returned it.

After all of that, I called SewGold in Chicago to get their suggestions. They set me up with a 750W motor that worked perfectly without any fiddling. I've used this shop before and they are awesome - their customer service is in a different league entirely.

Setting up a servo motor on my barn find Juki LU-563 has been a journey. I got a lot of recommendations for different motors, primarily the Consew 750, but I was impatient and purchased the 750W Reliable servo motor with a needle positioner. It was readily available on Amazon (I know, boo) and would arrive before I headed out on a canoe trip. It had reasonable reviews and the company looked legit, so I felt comfortable paying the premium over the generic servo motors. It arrived quickly and undamaged. That's where the positives end.

One of my goals this year is to be better about putting products up on my website, so here are some ultralight collapsible dog bowls. These came about after a long run with my dog Mable. It was super hot and she needed water in the worst way. Luckily we live where she could run down to the water for a drink, but I recognized that I needed a way to provide water for her if I needed.

These bowls are super light (<10g) and crazy packable. They are made using remnants from other products.

It was super hot and she needed water in the worst way. Luckily we live where she could run down to the water for a drink, but I recognized that I needed a way to provide water for her if I needed.

These bowls are super light (<10g) and crazy packable. They are made using remnants from other products.

I'm not about to start my modeling career, but I am happy to say that my first running outing with my Run commute/fast pack was a resounding success. The straps were comfortable. The pack sat nice and high, and didn't really bounce. I feel like there is plenty of room for gear and daily work stuff.

I spent some time during this rainy day to put together two camera bag designs. These bags are designed to be pretty minimalist. The small size will hold a small mirror less camera and a short focal length zoom or prime lens. The large size will fit a DSLR and up to a 6" lens, which equates to a 200mm prime lens for me. Both of these bags are fully padded and have multiple carry options.
